Ways Of Relieving Cold Sores

By Chris Borg

Most people in their lifetime will be affected by cold sores. They spread easily and are a viral infection that our bodies have trouble completely getting rid of. The question everyone seems to want to know is are cold sores contagious?

There is really not just one answer to this question. A cold sore is the herpes simplex virus and it hides deep within the nerve roots and can not be taken away with any type of medicine. The sore is usually a small area that does cause a bit of pain. The blister spot can be filled with fluid. These are mostly found on the lips. A symptom to look for before it appears is that the area where it will be will be on fire and tingle. Generally, these blisters only last for a few days.

There are several reason that people will get this virus. A few of the more popular reasons associated with getting cold sores are being in contact with an infected person, over exposing yourself to the sun, a hormonal change, stress, a type of damage to the skin and also an illness can trigger the virus. They can come back right away, wait years or just never come back. When they do come back they tend to show up in the same spot as they were previously.

The prevention of sores is possible. Some ways to prevent getting cold sores is to avoid contact with the person infected. Do not touch or kiss that person. Even if there are no blisters on the person and they have cleared up that person could still be contagious because the saliva could still be carrying the infection.

Another thing that seems to be a given is not to share your personal items with others. Items such as towels, Chap Stick, lip gloss or utensils should never be shared. If you are the one who does obtain the virus avoid toughing other parts of your body after being exposed to the blisters because it could spread to the other areas that were touched. Always wear sunscreen all year around.

Depending on what method you like best, there are pills to ease the symptoms or a topical cream to help clear up symptoms. Home remedies that have worked for others are, using a cold compress, changing your diet and changing your diet. Other include the use of supplements such as vitamin E oil, Zinc, and vitamin C.

Lysine is also another good remedy. It is a natural supplement that is an amino acid. It can be taken in the pill form or through your diet. Foods that contain Lysine are fish, chicken, vegetables, cheese and milk. Lysine can be purchased at any store. Other natural supplements include vitamin C, Bioflavonoids and Zinc. Another good treatment is Abreva. Abreva is the only FDA approved cold sore treatment that heals fast. It is a cream that is applied to the area and reduces the pain and itching. It contains an active ingredient which is commonly used in cosmetics.

So, the answers to the question are cold sores contagious are really a variety of answers depending on the situation. Knowing that there are several prevention methods and treatment options should put people at ease. The fact that there are things to make cold sore sufferers feel better with no cure readily available is a calming notion.
